Don’t Revolve Around Him

Piri “Cosuluvme”

“Cosuluvme” is Piri’s solo debut – as in, she’s singing, she’s writing, she’s producing, it’s all her. The lyrics basically explain how Piri & Tommy broke up, or more specifically, how they broke up as a couple and then as a band. There are some harsh lines directed towards Tommy (“he’s a baby boy, very young for 26”) but it’s not a bitter or mean spirited song. She mostly sounds frustrated with herself for trying to hold on to the relationship for longer than she should have, and eager to move on. And while he certainly added a touch of vaguely jazzy elegance to their songs together, she’s clearly well-equipped to carry on without him.

Pearl & The Oysters “Doom Mood”

“Doom Mood” is a breezy bossa nova song, but with a surreal twist. It sounds like it was arranged with dream logic, so all the familiar elements of this sort of song feel slightly off: the guitar and percussion carry a manic, accelerated energy that contrasts with the song’s relaxed vibe, while the overdriven organ is so heavily saturated it evokes the sensation of heavy condensation. It’s not pushed to the point of breaking the mood, but it certainly signals an eccentric point of view.
