Great interview! I loved the blog version of M:WH? so much I actually printed out a copy on paper to refer to at odd times for strength and inspiration, like the Bible. So naturally I was stoked when an actual book came out. I hope he keeps updating it year to year. I wonder what Mr. Miller considers his best composition? When I try to turn someone on to Game Theory, I usually go with "Waltz the Halls" or "Erica's Word." My favorite Miller lyric is actually a misheard one, from "The Waist and the Knees"--for some reason I thought 'gotta be small when target time comes'...was actually "gotta be striped when tiger time comes"

Good interview. I was sad to see the Loud Family drop off the map just when Scott Miller's songwriting/production had landed him smack in the target zone of music I never get tired of (Days for Days, Attractive Nuisance) -- which is hardly the only time that's happened to me (see the Dismemberment Plan, the Balancing Act, the first incarnation of Bill Bruford's Earthworks, I could go on), but it's always a disappointing moment. Glad to hear about the new book, though. Sounds like a good read.

"Businessmen Are OK" seems to be in the "talking blues" tradition of "One More For Saint Michael"; both beautiful songs with 11 years between them. I also agree with Johns comment. Why people would rather buy (download) "Glee", which is a bunch of letter perfect recreations of sub-par material, to any one album from the Scott Miller canon is to me, one of lifes great mysteries. Sometimes I think his hyper-creative originality, that permeates each element of his music/record making, is his worst enemy. It's simply too much beauty for the majority it seems. But some of us "get it", and I want to thank Scott for his efforts against impenetrable odds. Your music and humor continue to inspire, and if you ever get around to putting those fragments down, PLEASE let me know.

Terrific questions, Matthew. It's funny -- I've always thought that Scott is a genius songwriter, and almost everything he put out from '86 to '00 is high on my various best-of lists, but matching up his lists and my own taught me years ago that an endorsement, even from a genius, doesn't necessarily translate into agreement, in the same way that one eventually realizes that a blurb from a favorite author doesn't guarantee that one will like the blurbed book. A valuable lesson.

Still, no one except maybe Andy Partridge balances knowledgeable criticism with raw enthusiasm like Scott, and it'd be wonderful to see the book get wide attention. At the least, maybe people will take another look at the great "Soul Drain" video!

Yeah, that's one of my top favorites too. Such a novel conceit for a rock song.
