I was singing along with my fist raised for the bulk of the night. It was a religious experience seeing this classic lineup. I had seen the Gillard lineup so many times, but I never truly saw Guided By Voices until last night. Mitch was hugging so many fans after the show.

I TOTALLY GET YOU WITH THE POINTING. I loved seeing so many raised fists last night, and people hugging each other with joy...what a great show.

My previous GBV live experiences were solely in the mid-90s in Ohio, where they played small clubs and medium-to-large festivals, to crowds ranging from generically enthusiastic to curious to indifferent. So it was trippily surreal to see the crowd response and devotion that you mention above--especially the singalongs. I've always enjoyed GBV but sort of assumed the lyrics were charming toss-offs. Hearing them yelled so meaningfully by the people around me, I realized I have been mistaken and must now go back and reassess the lyricism of Mr. Pollard.
I missed the late-90s, early 00's stuff, too, though! Underrated, indeed.
In general, I always knew they were awesome--but it was great and weird to see them treated like the arena rock gods we always knew they secretly were, you know?
