		<description>I agree with you that "Undertow" presents a certain kind of loss, one that leads to crushing loneliness, but I don't know if the speaker in the song is "practicing for the time you actually have to communicate these things to them directly", instead I think that if we look at the line "Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight" (which is repeated several times), I think the song is more of a reflection on the empty feeling of being alone.  I think the speaker knows the relationship is over, and the fact that the speaker cannot stop lamenting this fact is the undertow of the song, it's got her and it's not letting go.
