I tend to like his songs about depression more than the sweet numbers (I suffer from severe depression and his songs have a way of making me feel better about my mood swings by reassuring me that they’re silly and overdramatic and lots of people go through them).

That said, I love the trio of songs that begins with “Sex Karma” and ends with “Famine Affair”. Those three songs perfectly encapsulate everything the band does well. I love this whole record, actually.

As an aside: Appreciate the spelling for of Montreal. SO MANY PPL EFF IT UP AND IT IS SUCH A SIMPLE CONCEIT! You would think that a band as careful of its image as Kevin Barnes is of his group would receive corresponding respect from the people who write about his band. Capitalizing of Montreal is about as backward as a Canadian talking about this rapper called Jay Zed.

I try to stick with the official capitalization, but there are times when grammar and context demands that you capitalize the Of, kinda like how sometimes you need to use the definite article with bands like Pixies, Dirty Projectors, and Liars.

Those were my thoughts exactly after my first listens to Sex Karma. It’s by far my favorite track off False Priest. Barnes has always written some absolutely fantastic songs about being crazily in love, and old favorites like Lysergic Bliss spring to my mind when I hear this track. And ‘you are my only luxury item’ is one of his greatest lines ever, right up there with ‘the creator of what’s now cliche’ and ‘We’re always touching by underground wires’.

Brilliant song. What do you think of “You Do Mutilate” (the 5 minutes before the monologue)? I find its chaos so inventive and exciting - that something so jumbled can be so infectious at the same time.
