Perhaps they are mastering these CDs shittily so the companies have a chance in a few years to rerelease a "remastered" version!

Thanks Matthew for this whole series, I've had Perfect Sound on my Amazon wishlist for a while, and it may be time to purchase it.

The most poorly mastered record of all time is "Icky Thump" by The White Stripes. Every single bass drum hit clips horrible. There is no definition. It's just utter shit. This is extremely ironic, by the way, because it was recorded on analog tape and Jack White cares a great deal about the sound of records. The vinyl version of "Icky Thump" sounds fine.

Other records that have atrocious mastering: "First Impressions of Earth" by The Strokes and "The Blueprint 3" by Jay-Z.

One interesting game I've been playing with sound - how production and mastering change an album - lately is listening to my vinyl copy of Cheap Trick's In Color album next to (mp3s of) the Albini re-recording the band did in the 1990s. Tracks from that are out on the web, and it's really interesting how the same songs by the same band under much the same circumstances (by which I mean: both in a multitrack recording studio going to tape) can get entirely different atmosphere.

Here's a YouTube of the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwKq310xrIQ
Here's what they did with Albini: http://reviewstalker.blogspot.com/2009/05/cheap-trick-in-color-mix-by-steve.html

No, you're misunderstanding -- because I didn't properly explain that aside. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are notorious for being egregious examples of the "loudness war," their album Californication is extremely loud and clips horribly.
