I guess I'm like TravisG regarding Interpol; I actually liked Our Love To Admire as a whole, but this new album?..... yikes. You may be right about them, Matthew. (Although I do also like the song "Barricade".)

Losing Carlos D, they'll have little choice but to dramatically reinvent themselves. I think it's a fine record, but I'm in the minority obviously at this stage. And it is possible (although slim I'd guess) that they'll eventually involve David Pajo and Brandon Curtis in their recording and songwriting, which could considerably shake up their sound.

i'm really looking forrward to the b&s album.. three years between two albums for this band seems too long. three years between interpol albums is long too, but this album has left me a bit cold... it feels like after "our love to admire", they have taken a step back, not actually gone 'back to basics' with the album... a lot of their stuff is starting to sound "samey", and i'm finding myself losing interest in them at a rapid rate.

Agree completely with your takes on both songs ... I was starting to wonder if I'm just getting old and cranky, because I felt really "ehh" about both the new B&S single and the Interpol album as a whole, despite really wanting to like them.

Interpol especially is hard to wrap my head around, because as you said, it sounds like the band is completely depressed. I was one of the few who thought that "Our Love To Admire" was a pretty good record, "Rest My Chemistry" and "Pioneer To The Falls" were some of their strongest songs ever. This new record, though ... it's like all the Interpol elements are there, the murky basslines, the clanging, mechanized-feeling guitar riffs, Banks' disaffected vocals ... but it never seems to add up to songs that feel passionate or vital. I don't want to say they're going through the motions, because it doesn't strike me as a lazy album (like, say, almost everything Oasis did after "Morning Glory"), but yeah, the band just seems so miserable that it makes listening to this difficult.
