Perhaps I'm a bit older and those happened to be fairly decent, memorable years for me, but I love the late 90s. I don't think any era is inherently better than any other but I'd put the period from say 1996-2002 up against any 7-year period of music, ever.

That said if I was a teen, unless I was a teen with extremely strong awareness & good taste, I may not have liked it so much.

It always sounded to me like the groove in Kylie's "Love at First Sight" was a slightly altered version of the groove from Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You." So when I listen to Ke$ha, I hear Daft Punk (and it sounds pretty decent).

You may have heard of experiments where people were tricked into thinking some cheap wine was great because they were told it was expensive. I wonder how much you could conduct the same trick in terms of music -- i.e., taking the same riff and then having a unhip band play, and then have a cool band play it, etc., and then see how people's reactions change.

Thanks, I only have myself to blame, really, and I've grown a lot since then. I've learned from it and moved on. I also think I undercut what you must've gone through. I'm sure life sucked under Reagan and Bush I. But most of what I feel I missed about the 90's might be revisionist history. Lately, I just feel that music has gotten so regressive. I feel a sense of restlessness whenever I hear "new" music, especially Hip-Hop. The genre itself has been around for almost 40 years and no one has created a new genre since then? Really? Do I have to count Reggaeton? Nobody creates anymore, they're just "inspired" by other art. It reminds of John Lennon speaking on nostalgia:

Ha, yeah, a lot of my friends now are a bit younger than me, and the 90s they remember is the late 90s and the late 90s kinda sucks. Everything totally shifts in 1995/1996.

Sorry about the woman who could've been your wife. That sounds very painful.

It's really interesting to hear about the 90's from that perspective. I was only a kid then, but I hated the 90's. It felt like the decade that would never end. I wasn't aware of the best music from the 90's like Illmatic, Slanted & Enchanted, The Low End Theory, and OK Computer until I was in high school. What I remember being exposed to at the time was stuff like Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, and Matchbox 21. Ugh. Then I entered high school in 2001 and 9/11 happened. I feel that event, or more precisely the events that followed it, ruined an entire generation of kids. It feels like a lost decade to me. I look back at the 00's and think about all that could have been: the friends that could still be alive if it wasn't for two stupid wars, all the great art that could've been made if this country hadn't sunk into an anti-intellectual, willfully ignorant rut, the woman that could've been my wife if I had just stopped being angry at the world and allowed her to love me. I often feel jealous of people your age. You lived during such an amazing time.
