Between 1996 and 1998, there was the goth craze, the ska craze and the nascent electronica craze, but legends and icons they did not produce. Mainstream pop/rock felt banal and unexciting, esecially when compared to the years shortly before and after. The late 90's have always seemed a lot more disposable and forgettable to me than say, the late 00's. Maybe it's just the years as I remember them or my lack of sentimemtality for the era, but his past decade of people like Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Thom Yorke, Kanye, MIA and this rise in crossing genres seems a lot more musically and artistically-rich than the mid/late 90's.
