Great discussion. Times and the idea of celebrity change so quickly now. What is acceptable and even expected of an artist. Prince (a good example) was always so guarded. Stack that up against Kanye on Twitter...there's an ocean between them. Oh, and I certainly remember cassette singles! I think I even recall having Smells Like Teen Spirit on a cassette single. Maybe I could sell it on eBay.

Also I would posit that things moved slower back then with radio, print media, and MTV and that sort of froze certain personalities in our minds as being more significant than they actually were. We may be a little shorter on megastars, but I guess I also feel a little relief for the relative lack of perosnality cults.

Gaga uses Twitter and has 5.6 million followers (much more than "a few hundred thousand") -- so unlike Beyonce, she in no way subscribes to the "private entity" theory of pop stardom. She is totally symbiotic with her fan love, not floating above it as Beyonce does.

And it's true, we are lower on icons per capita than we used to be, but we've still got a bunch -- it's just that they're a bit less interesting. Bieber is obviously an icon to his audience, as is Timberlake. Rihanna is trying to pull of sort of an art-damaged "black Madonna" thing if you watch her most recent videos, it's all out of the EROTICA / BEDTIME STORIES playbook. We do have Kanye, though. Oh, how we have Kanye.

I think I am going to try to recreate that 1988 mixtape today.

I rememeber that small pocket of years in between the death of Kurt Cobain and the rise of MP3's as a time when people seemed to become more infatuated with genre trends than with the artists. Between 1996 and 1998, there was the goth craze, the ska craze and the nascent electronica craze, but legends and icons they did not produce. Mainstream pop/rock felt banal and unexciting, esecially when compared to the years shortly before and after. The late 90's have always seemed a lot more disposable and forgettable to me than say, the late 00's. Maybe it's just the years as I remember them or my lack of sentimemtality for the era, but his past decade of people like Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Thom Yorke, Kanye, MIA and this rise in crossing genres seems a lot more musically and artistically-rich than the mid/late 90's.
