Late to the conversation but I am happy to report that the next day Sonic Youth (fivesome) performed The Eternal in Montreal (all tracks except Leaky Lifeboat, Massage the History, Thunderclap and -- most unfortunately -- Malibu Gas Station). Poison Arrow was most incredible a few track in when they were hitting their stride but the whole set was fantastic.
With extra time given from a scheduling change from promoters, they played Sprawl-Cross the Breeze to close. I too had seen lots of Daydream Nation at recent shows, but somehow I think that they just keep getting better and better at it and welcome it since their approach to it is staying fresh.

St. Vincent is one of the most fantastic performers out there in my opinion. I've seen her a few times, had the pleasure of interviewing her--and am totally blown away by her talent, album after album.

I dunno. Maybe we should all lobby hard as fans to get them to play more recent oldies! I feel like they think we all just want the 80s/early 90s stuff, and the most obvious songs at that. I know I'm not alone in wanting to see them do a lot of stuff from 92 - 99 again.

Well, Washing Machine is a bad example -- "Skip Tracer" is very frequently played, it's the most recent song to be in regular oldies rotation. NYC Ghosts/Murray Street/Sonic Nurse stuff is presumably permanently gone without Jim O'Rourke in the band, and Rather Ripped/Eternal songs are only played with Mark Ibold.

This is the oldies rotation since around 1999, with some songs coming and going depending on the tour:

Confusion Is Sex -- Making the Nature Scene, Shaking Hell, The World Looks Red, Inhuman, Brother James

Bad Moon Rising - Death Valley 69

Evol - Tom Violence, Shadow of a Doubt, Expressway To Yr Skull

Sister - Schizophrenia, Catholic Block, Stereo Sanctity, Pacific Coast Highway, Cotton Crown, White Cross

Daydream Nation -- all of it

Goo - Mote, Kool Thing

Dirty - 100%, Sugar Kane, Drunken Butterfly

Experimental Jet Set - Bull in the Heather

Sonic Youth setlists are getting a little frustrating nowadays, in that it seems that you can guarantee that (until this concert at least) it will be 75% new album and 25% songs from 86-90, and that's it. And then on the next album's tour it will be the same arrangement (although that is better than the days when it was 100% new album). It's not as if this is about anti-crowd pleasing, since the 25% are usually classics, if taken from the same pool. But just feels a little strange to me that once they've toured their new album, they seem to forget about it - so what chance to hear songs from Washing Machine, Murray Street and Rather Ripped again, all of each are equals to the ones they do play.
