I have seen Sonic Youth play a wide variety of venues, many of them notorious for shitty sound, and no matter what, Sonic Youth always sounds terrific. Town Hall and Beacon Theater are fine, but ONLY if you do mellow sit-down music. Hammerstein Ballroom is wonderful because it's a big space that allows people to DANCE. Scissor Sisters were amazing there. I'm seeing Goldfrapp there later this week, and that's a great venue for them. (Goldfrapp was wasted on the Beacon Theater, even during the 7th Tree phase.) The only reason so many shows go there now is because it's the biggest venue in the Bowery Presents empire, and they are like a mafia in terms of booking.
