Working On My Senses

Charlotte Hatherley “Little Sahara”

Charlotte Hatherley’s new album New Worlds is obsessed with color, to such an extent that nearly every track describes understanding experiences and emotions via color metaphors rendered in sound and words. The art comes from a synesthetic point-of-view more than it evokes synethesia itself, but in a way the former is more intriguing. At points Hatherley sounds like a crackpot, but in the context of her dynamic, perky pop songs, her thrill in color and fascination with life becomes a visceral sensation. In “Little Sahara,” she imagines seeing her lover only as abstracted colorful light, casting aside the body for a total emotional freedom. The idea drifts off, but her excitement does not as the chorus hits over and over with urgency and desire. That’s the fun of New Worlds — not only does it shift perspective, but it embraces the joy of finding new things to see and love in the world around you.

Am really enjoying this track! But the mp3 you posted is called “Full Circle” and not “Little Sahara”. Did you accidentally upload the wrong track?

  2. Matthew Perpetua says:

Oh whoops, I changed my mind on what song I was writing up today but forgot to switch the mp3 too.

God, I love her. That’s all. New album is just brilliant. I think I first heard her solo stuff via your site (a post about “Love’s Young Dream” ? Yes?), so thanks for that.

Maybe if you and Maura at Idolator join forces, we can lure her to tour stateside (in non-Bat for Lashes capacity…).

She is going to tour in the US, this album is coming out on Minty Fresh, it’s her first US release.

  5. Luis says:

They’re both awesome songs. I need to check out more music by her. Thanks

I’m glad you finally got around to posting something from this album. I was about to send a copy of it to you for fear that it had slipped past your radar.

  7. Deric says:

P.S. I cannot express how EXTREMELY excited I am that she’s actually embarking on a stateside tour, at looooooooooong last. Probably my favorite artist of the decade. And once again, I cannot thank you enough for your introduction to her magic and perspicacity.

P.P.S. AND how excited I am that there’s some (if only digital at this point) stateside distribution of Charlotte’s music domestically. I was beginning to feeIl like I needed to personally spearhead a Charlotte In The US campaign. I’m glad someone finally gleaned onto her appeal in this country. Glad beyond measure.

Psssst Deric I’m doing the Pitchfork review.
