As explosive and captivating as tune-yards' show was, I think her strongest in-concert qualities are the ones hardest to properly translate from a live context to a studio recording. Here's hoping she can reproduce that energy and life on album 2.

I've never seen an opening act steal a show like that (actually, the last time I saw someone come close was when the DP opened for Deerhoof at the Bowie thing). By the time she got to "Move to My Hood," the crowd was eating out of her hand. When she finishes building her beat and the bass comes in, half the crowd gawks with mouths agape while everyone else throws up their arms as if it were a JayZ show. In fact, apparently Questlove tweeted during the Sunday show that TY was the best shit he's seen "in a minute."The new tracks were actually stronger than the album tracks. Can't wait to grab that follow-up.

I had exactly the same feelings when I saw them tour together in London- DP were excellent, but tUnE-yArDs was just something else. What a breathtaking talent.

the sheer pleasure of hearing these people nail melodies as brilliant and life-affirming as those in “Cannibal Resource,” “No Intention,” “Remade Horizon,” and “Stillness Is The Move” feels something like a miracle.

nice

Totally agree on tUnE-yArDs. I saw them open for Sunset Rubdown a few weeks ago and had the exact same experience. (http://awkwardpress.com/my-week-of-many-shows-part-1-sunset-rubdowntune-yards-at-the-troubadour/) SR released my favorite record of the year, but even their epic dragon tales couldn't hold my interest after Merill left the stage. I can't wait til she comes around again.

A friend of mine had this exact same response to the show in Salt Lake City. The AIM-screenname thing always put me off, but I look forward to being converted when she heads back my way.

"It’s easy to just sit there totally in awe of their craft, but if you’re kinda over that aspect of what they do, the less engaging songs in the set can get a bit dull."

This is exactly why I toyed with the idea of attending one of these four shows and still haven't gone. But Tune-Yards is calling me.
