OMG YES! She is so on the money about preciousness and how absolutely vile it is.
11/9/07 4:35 pm
The thirty words here: “…knocking some vegans together to start a mosh pit. I think what bothers me the most about preciousness is that it takes good form and reduces it to good manners…” win my Friday prize for best conjunction of image and insight. She must have been taking lessons from Mr. Fluxblog. Go Ms. Brownstein!

Wow. At first I thought she was just railing against preciousness in general, but the more she says, the more it’s pretty damn obvious that she has a certain band who live in the same city as she does in mind.

I gotta say that i don’t miss that trash talking PDX music scene insider crap. Or people that think that moving from Oly to Portland is some major step in the broadening of their horizons.

“Songs in commercials are the arranged marriages of the music business, with the fans as the naive bride or groom, forced to pair that which they hold dear with something they have yet to meet. Occasionally, it’s a pleasant surprise and the coupling is a success, but most often it ends in heartbreak.”
This is crap writing. Who’s getting married to whom again? What?

Yeah dude, Public Enemy #1 is probably one of the best Hip Hop joints I’ve heard this year. It’s right up there with Graduation and Pharoahe Monch’s Desire. It’s way better than Curtis by a long shot.

Oh yeah, and Cam has the whole mixtape as a free download on his Myspace, but you should definately cop the hard copy (no homo) at Mixtape Monster.

If she was talking about the Decemberists, she was being pretty unfair. Not so much preciousness nowadays, rather than stagecraft. No more of an affectation than the Pete Townsend windmills she kept on doing whenever I saw her live.
Of course, if she did specify who she was talking about, we could engage with her. Cowardice for her not to.

Actually C. Brown says she likes the Decemberists in the comments, but that may be just indie politics.
And hey, Matt, I’ve counted a few times where you’ve indirectly dissed the Decemberists or given them backhanded compliments. Do you really have a thing against the band? Or is it their somewhat annoying fanbase?

I like a bunch of Decemberists songs, they’re a decent band. I’ve never written about them, though. My interest in this link had more to do with how much of what Brownstein was saying applied directly to them, whether it was intentional or not, it was kinda funny to me.

I’m hot-and-cold on the Decemberists, but I don’t consider them to be precious. The Crane Wife, for one, flexed some muscle.
11/11/07 2:16 am
I meant “precocious” not “precious”.
11/14/07 9:25 am
as an indie rock blogger, i agree and disagree with brown about the decemberists. when it comes down to it, i either like an artist’s music or i don’t; it either pleases my ear or doesn’t. the decemberists have some great songs, but just because they may be overly nerdy and from another time in history, doesn’t mean someone should be bashing them and their fans. i guess brown is running out of things to write about.
11/14/07 2:19 pm
“From another time in history”?
11/14/07 6:32 pm
i meant their music is comprised of stories and tales that evoke a time in history, specifically early maritime adventures, old ships, bucolic characters, longing and regrets.
others please chime in.
11/14/07 7:09 pm
I think you just made an argument for the Decemberists being really, really precious!

“Actually C. Brown says she likes the Decemberists in the comments”
she says that she likes their music, but doesn’t say anything about their shows.
