I was wondering what had happened to her. “Because I Can” struck me as a wildly uneven album, with some songs sounding like potential hits and other songs sounding like disasters. Unlike Avril or a lot of other artists who released an album as a teenager, “Because I Can” really sounded like the work of a 16-year-old, not the work of The Matrix. The music was pretty similar to Avril in parts, but the lyrics were all over the place. Katy Rose seemed full of ambition but lacking the experience to know lyrics that worked from lyrics that didn’t work (as one might expect from a 16-year-old). What amazed me about “Because I Can” was that it seemed to have been made with little or no guidance, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that if it was true. On one hand, I thought I could get behind the authenticity of it. On the other, I wondered what it could have been if it had received some expert collaboration. I don’t know if she received any help with “Rosemary,” but I hear a lot of growth.
