As a Christian, and a deeply committed one, I am so thrilled when people like Andrew Beaujion can take an honest look at Christian culture (or lack of it) and not be biased from the start.

I wish more Christians and non-Christians could see each others' side of the story more.

Great interview! I grew up in a Christian home. Even Christian Rock was considered in some way evil. I would go down to the basement and listen to “bad” Christian rock mix tape on walkman. I am no longer Christian. I do find it interesting when artist like Pedro the Lion or Soul-Junk (insane rap, noise skronk, free jazz, Christian rock) who see the hypocrisy in the church, yet choose to critique the church instead of rejecting Christianity totally. The link is to an interview I did with Glen from Soul-Junk.

Great interview. In my opinion though, there are only two types of music: good or bad...

Daniel Amos : The Alarma! Chronicles
http://www.danielamos.com/articles/spotlight.html
"...can you imagine Frank Zappa conducting XTC with The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn on vocals? That is how monumentally vast the music of Daniel Amos is."

Adam Again ... a funk-rock monolith
http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm/content_id.4602/Music
"In the rock & roll arena they are simply one of the most inventive and artfully canny bands on any scene." - All Music Guide

Mark Heard ... Poet to the Poets
http://www.markheard.net
"In a perfect world Mark Heard would be mentioned alongside such influential songwriters as John Hiatt, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson and Steve Earle." - All Music Guide

wow! i gotta buy this book!

i'm another "christian music" ex-pat who purged most of his christian record collection circa college.

i'm glad i held on to a few, which i still dig, on occasion:

daniel amos: alarma! [early 80s new wave / ELO gumbo]

adam again: homeboys [talking heads white funk alt-rock]

the lead: automoloch [esp. one or two good messy hardcore tunes]

sfc: a saved man in the jungle [v. public enemy-inspired]

It's disingenuous to compare "Christian rock" with genres of music like hip hop. I know there are bands at all levels of christianness, but a central tenet of evangelicism is conversion of others. That's at least a little creepy to us heathens.

I think that suspicion represents the views of a lot of people on Christian rock. We're waiting for Sufjan to say "come to church and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior." As long as he doesn't do that, we're OK with it.

Well done interview.

Daniel Amos : The Alarma! Chronicles

Great interview. In my opinion though, there are only two types of music: good or bad...

Daniel Amos : The Alarma! Chronicles
http://www.danielamos.com/articles/spotlight.html
"...can you imagine Frank Zappa conducting XTC with The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn on vocals? That is how monumentally vast the music of Daniel Amos is."

Adam Again ... a funk-rock monolith

"In the rock & roll arena they are simply one of the most inventive and artfully canny bands on any scene." - All Music Guide

Mark Heard ... Poet to the Poets

"In the rock & roll arena they are simply one of the most inventive and artfully canny bands on any scene." - All Music Guide

Mark Heard ... Poet to the Poets

"In a perfect world Mark Heard would be mentioned alongside such influential songwriters as John Hiatt, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson and Steve Earle." - All Music Guide

Great interview. I'm glad you were willing to talk about this issue with the right frame of mind. It seems silly to approach the "Christian Market" so emotionally, like so many people who have commented on this post have. Intelligent people don't go saying, "Everyone who likes Rap is an idiot" just because they don't like it. In the same way, why should people react differently to the Christian scene any differently than any other scene?

I also really appreciated how credible this guy was, cause I love David Crowder too, and for just the reasons that he's listed. He's very honest, and did his homework, and you did a great job of showing that.
