Leslie Feist “Mushaboom” (demo) - The...

Knee-Deep Snow

Leslie Feist “Mushaboom” (demo) - The melody of this song is just plain gorgeous. This is apparently a rough demo, and as such the sound quality is a bit shoddy and lo-fi. It sounds as though she just recorded it live in some echoey room with the windows open. I’m hoping that this song is fully realized when it is recorded in the studio - I don’t think it needs much more in terms of arrangement, but a smoother tone on the solo, a melodic bass line, and some light percussion would definitely be a good thing.

Product 01 “Heart Ov Glass” - This is an electro/glitch cover of the Blondie classic. Or at least I think that’s basically what genre it falls into - after googling this song, I’ve seen it referred to as being “glitchout,” which is a term I’ve never seen before. Actually, I’m not totally clear on what “glitch” is to begin with. I suppose that it is a fairly descriptive term, but as with a lot of subgenres within dance music, I’m never very confident in identifying them by name unless it’s totally obvious. Usually, I’d rather just say “dance” or “disco.” Such is the life of the dilettante…

The Pop Nose link doesn’t work.

  2. Matthew says:

Yes it does. Their server is just being really wacky lately because they are reorganizing the entire Freaky Trigger site. Keep trying.

  3. Josie says:

just wanted to let you know that i enjoy visiting your site. you’re a regular visit for me now :)

Um the PopNose link doesn’t work, sorry Matthew, so you should probably take it down. The server landed in trouble and by a round about way this means a bandwidth audit is taking place - PopNose will be back and running when it’s been decided how much bandwidth we can afford to use for it. The files are still up there but who nose - I mean *knows* - how to get to them.

  5. Matthew says:

Damn. I really should have downloaded those songs while I was still having access to the page!

    glitch?
i read it as “nerdy whiteboys with too much time on a laptap”

Matt, the Leslie Feist thing illustrates why you’re on my favorites. Though I slightly disagree with your comments. I love the field recording quality, the static and hum, the street sounds coming through. It’s a great artifact of the moment, you know? Any polishing would diminish it many times over. I swear, I’ve listened to this thing about eight times through.

  8. Matthew says:

Oh, I appreciate the lo-fi charms of the recording - the ambient sounds in the room really give the recording a special character that I enjoy. Still, I am aware that it’s intended to be a demo, and I’m approaching it as such. If it was released as a record just like this, it would be fine by me.

Exactly what Jeb said. Mushaboom is going on every mix cd for the next month and I’m gonna go find out more about this woman.

I wanted to first tell you how much I enjoy the blog. Fantastic stuff.

Secondly, I was curious how you were having these .mp3s hosted. Are you having a site host them and you’re just linking to them?

    Thanks!

sorry guys… this is random. this is for matt, who’s email i can’t find. I’m wondering if this is the same ‘matt’ perpetua i used to live with in brooklyn.

  12. Matthew says:

Helen! Yes it is! Email’s down on the bottom - fluxequalsrad @ hotmail.com! I lost your phone number ages ago and I’m very glad to hear from you!

Steve, the mp3s are hosted on a friend’s free mac server account. I’m not clear on what the situation with that is, but we’ve been hosting mp3s and photos off of it for nearly two years now, and we’ve never had a problem. I have no clue how you go about getting one of these accounts, though.

Why is everyone calling you “Matt” today?

  14. Rich says:

Its hard to believe she is the same woman who sung with gonzales so frequently. Would love to know how you stumbled across this recording…

  15. Matthew says:

I was googling around looking for something else, and I stumbled upon a playlist that included that song along with some other things that I already knew and liked, and so I looked it up on soulseek.

  16. greg says:

i think ‘glitch’ comes from some experimental, sound artist types who began intentionally defacing cds, creating glitches when they were played.

  17. sylvia says:

yes i love mushaboom as well. so fine, and i would not change a thing.
